自動鏈排爐爐排的外形類似皮帶運輸機。煤由上煤機送進煤斗，再從煤斗內依靠自重落到爐排上，隨爐排自前后緩慢移動。煤閘板的高度可以調節，以控制煤層的厚度。空氣從爐排下面送入，于煤層運動方向相交。煤在爐膛內受到輻射加熱，依次完成預熱、干燥、著火、燃燒、直至燃盡。灰渣則隨爐排移動到后部，經過擋渣板（俗稱老鷹鐵）落入后部灰渣斗由刮板出渣機排除。

鏈排爐的種類很多，按其結構形式一般可分為鏈帶式、橫梁式、鱗片式、傾斜式和往復式等；其中，鏈條式爐排和橫梁式爐排因其結構的優越性、使用壽命長和操作的高機械化等特點，被廣泛應用于煤泥、煤炭烘干領域，并取得良好的烘干效果。
